The Prelims - 28th February 2009

This was our first competition since the Club Championships nearly a year ago, and several changes to partnerships had taken place and we were all keen to see they all fared against the best in the region.

In Grade 1 Women's Groups, probably the hardest working partnership of Sara, Rachael and Katy produced a brilliant performance of their Chicago routine and scored a creditable 24.99.

At the same level in Women's Pairs, Emma and Megan almost matched their score, coming in with 24.66.

Women's Pairs Prep B saw one of two surprises of the day with Amy and Carys finishing fourth (missing a Bronze by only 0.5 of a mark). However as the top four go through to the Inter-Regional competition at this level, they now have a chance of improving on that position in a month or so's time. A fall in Vicky and Heather's routine saw their score drop accordingly, but they still managed to finish 8th.

In Women's Pairs Prep A, first time out for Hannah and Boston saw them achieve a deserved 6th place with Elizabeth and Zoe just behind in 7th.

We had just one tumbler, Liam at Grade 1, and after a shaky first run from both tumblers at this level, the surprise of the day was for Liam to win and become our first ever Southern Region Champion! He now goes onto the National Finals in May to see if he can continue this success.

It was also pleasing to see that if we look at these results and remove any 'non-Southampton' gymnasts from the reckoning (and therefore create what will be the entry for the Club Championships in two weeks time), every single gymnast here today would be winning a medal, so roll on the Club Championships and let's see if that holds true!!!!!
